I have heard people say things like &quot;that seems like an elaborate process just to choose software&quot; but the costs of a thorough, structured evaluation are trivial compared to the lifetime costs of buying a software package. As you say, even with careful structure we will still make some mistakes, but at least we can minimise the risks of this.  Also, if your company is the type that likes scapegoats, having a well documented, objective process will help if someone does cast around looking for someone to blame in the case of what turns out with hindsight to be a mistaken choice.</description>

					<description>This is a great reminder of the discipline we need in order to select software, which is a very complicated purchase for the best companies.  The discipline often gets portrayed as &quot;too much process,&quot; but when a mistake is made we'll be better off if we have done our homework to arrive at the best decision.</description>
