The best part is that users continue to refer SAP to their peers in other customers. This esp happens at Board or MD level.

Maybe the logic is "If this works this bad...others might be worse" Or "Maybe If I help SAP get another victim maybe they will continue to give me my daily fix"

I really liked this one:

Previously reasonable people would start to view the world entirely through the eyes of SAP, as though by using the software they had joined some secret society or cult.

Working in IT for over 8 years, I know what you are talking about!

The silver tongues of management consultants and salesmen. There was a great Dilbert on this where they have some huge IT project that is about to go in. Dilbert reviews the project plan and says to the management consultant: "hey this is all a big bang implementation - it could have a huge economic impact if it goes wrong". The management consultant looks worried fro a moment and fishes around in his briefcase, then emerges saying: "phew - you had me worried there. However I've checked my contract and I get paid the same whatever happens". This sums it up pretty well for me.

I like the humoristic style of your story, but in real life these are tragedies. We are now one version 2 (part of a global roll-out). Yesterday I was still struggling to get an invoice paid that came in January. On work management (on which the SAP project has been justified), we now have to realise the benefits by rolling out a real planning tool…
